Niagara Home & Tool Depot going country

You might not recognize the Niagara Home & Tool Depot come spring.

The St.Catharines tool shop will be a little more country come summer time, because owner Agata Federico is redesigning the look and character of her store.

The longtime businesswoman wants to spruce up the place with a wooden porch, new walls and a logo redesign. It's no wonder, as the Depot has often been described as a cross between a country general store and a do-it-yourself centre.

"We want to make people feel more comfortable, even people passing by, browsers," she said. "We are next to a very popular restaurant (The Mandarin) and we get window shoppers all through the night."

"It's funny, we had a small tool table set up in the old store and suddenly it turned into two tables and then three, and eventually took over the whole of the store," she said laughing. "It happened because we built up great contacts with our suppliers and the demand was there."

When Niagara Home & Tool Depot outgrew its old location, and moved to 588 Carlton St. two years ago, they noticed a spike in customers.

"When we moved to this new location, this building gave us fantastic exposure and more space," she said. "Our business doubled, but it wasn't just a new location, we were able to properly lay out displays with a cleaner, nicer atmosphere."

"It's so important to offer them items that they need and want at that moment," she explained. "Rakes in the spring, trailer jacks in July, etc. We treat our products like a commodity, like milk and orange juice." We make sure that we have stock of these items.

Home & Tool recognizes their customer demographic, so they made sure to set up a computer, connected to the Internet, with a giant monitor on their cash-out counter to show customers items that are in stock and display the specifications of tools.

To make life easy, the gang at Home & Tool groups things together into sections like air tools, auto, hydraulics, electrical and paint. Even the shopping bags are of top-notch quality.

"They love it, it's reusable, very strong. They would pay a buck for it if they had to purchase it," she said. "But they get it for free from me. It costs me 30 cents to have a happy customer, a small price to pay."
